Home to a rich local history

Burton-in-Kendal has a rich history, predating even the Domesday book, in which it was named as Borton. Some of the street names from around this period are still being used in Burton today, such as Boon Walk, Tanpits Lane, and Neddy Hill.

In 1661, Sir George Middleton established a weekly market in the town. Burton-in-Kendal then went on to have the most notable corn market in Westmoreland in the later 18th century. The corn market had a significant impact on the area, as it played a monumental role in growing its economy.

Later in the village’s history, the Kings Arms and the Royal Hotel were being used as coaching inns for stagecoaches from 1763 and, in 1844 and 1872.

St James’ Church (which itself dates back to Norman times) was restored. The lower parts of St James’ Church’s west tower still originates from the Norman times to this day.

Explore the village, the county, and beyond

This picturesque village is a gorgeous base to explore the history, culture and cuisine of Cumbria.

For exceptional scenery, visit the Arnside and Silverdale AONB which borders Cumbria and Lancashire, and take a walk across Hutton Roof Crag, a hill which has grassland, woodland, and vast areas of limestone paving. Leighton Moss, a nature reserve which the likes of otters, egrets, red deer, and the North West’s largest reed bed call home, is just 10 minutes away in the car.

Families will delight in Lakeland Wildlife Oasis and Cinderbarrow Miniature Railway, both making for thrilling days out for both little ones and older children, too.

The foodies amongst us will adore the local cuisine and the pubs and restaurants that serve it. Cumbria is the birthplace of an exciting mix of culinary specialties, including Cumberland sausage, Kendal mint cake, salt marsh lamb, and much more. Many local restaurants, eateries, and shops will sell these Cumbrian classics, giving you a real taste of the area.
